JMSB Advances to Semi-Finals at Students in Free Entreprise National Competition

The Concordia Entrepreneurship and Management Association (CEMA) and official Students in Free Entreprise (SIFE) were among the teams competing in the semi-finals at the Advancing Canadian Entrepreneurship (ACE) 2009 SIFE National Competition in Toronto. This is the best ever result for the team and places the group in 8th position across Canada. Over forty Canadian universities took part in the competition.

Team members that competed at the Toronto event include Gabriel Obadia, Philip Barrar, Allysha Carr, Jonathan O’Connell, Eric Pelsise, and Amanda Paquin.

While the team did not advance to the final round, they delivered a solid performance for a young and promising team with four years of competition experience. Team members include Jimmy Bakakis, Nicole Latour, Amanda Paquin, Eric Pelsise, Shannae Donaldson, Allysha Carr, Philip Barrar, Karin McCullock, Jonathan O’Connell, Gabriel Obadia, Adam Haroun, and Charles-Antoine Dupont.

The SIFE competition covers six educational topics: Market Economics, Success Skills, Entrepreneurship, Financial Literacy, Environmental Sustainability, and Business Ethics.

For a second consecutive year, JMSB was awarded 2nd prize at the HSBC Financial Literacy Competition category.

The team also went on to win the “Most Improved Team in Canada” award to underscore their dramatic growth and overall improvement.

Three team members were nominated for awards and Jonathan O’Connell brought home one of the six Founder’s Bursary awards. The $2,500 prize is awarded to students for their team leadership and outstanding contributions to their school’s SIFE program.

The team will be training for their next competition soon: the group is among six Canadian universities selected to compete in the Walmart SIFE “Green for the Greater Good Challenge” sustainability competition.
